The Entrepreneur’s Health & Wellbeing

There is a mental health crisis in entrepreneurship. We talk endlessly about entrepreneurs being the backbone of our economy and the key to our future prosperity and rightly so. Entrepreneurs build enduring companies that generate profitable revenues, create jobs, and contribute to their communities – we desperately need them.

Why? Because there are fewer and fewer traditional jobs for young graduates, and as we move ever deeper into a gig economy, we will need youth to find their entrepreneurial advantage to create jobs for themselves. The toxic nature of some companies has caused people to flee and take a chance on starting their own businesses.

But the implications of the identity as a founder or an entrepreneur is taking a toll on their psychological well-being. Entrepreneurs are trained to ignore their well-being; the message internalised from the most celebrated entrepreneurs is the outdated thinking of “no pain, no gain”.

While we focus on the macro wellbeing of local and global economies, there is a failure to measure the impact that mental health disorders and stress have on the micro wellbeing of founders. There is a mental health crisis raging among women and men who comprise the entrepreneurial community. Although acknowledged its ineffectively addressed. I know, because I crashed spectacularly. I bounced back with a new appreciation of the importance of nourishing my mind as I do my body

As entrepreneurs we add extra-ordinary value to job creation, but what about the value of the well-being? Its critically important to operate in a state of optimal emotional and relational health. Entrepreneurial success means taking care of your mental health as you do the physical.
